About the role
Incumbent will serve as a Maintenance Mechanic in the Engineering Service at the Oklahoma City VA Healthcare System. He/she will perform the duties of a fully trained construction specialist, performing various tasks from written and oral instructions.
Work consists of reading and interpreting blueprints, sketches, and drawings and performing material takeoffs for ordering various sizes of projects.

- Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions and failures and determines the extent of repairs and parts needed, estimated materials required, selects best work methods, techniques and trade practices and accomplishes the repair or overhaul.
- Responsible for selecting and safely using proper tools, devices, manuals, references and efficient procedures.
- Performs walk through inspections of buildings and initiates electronic work orders for deficiencies found.
- Responsible for measuring, cutting and constructing by using standard building materials.

- Responsible for measuring, cutting, constructing, installing, repairing and modifying routine mill work, framing, benches, partitions, tables, furniture, and perform work to close tolerances, exact fit, and structural soundness.
- Responsible for interpreting blueprints, sketches, manufacturers' specifications, and technical manuals, and be knowledgeable in shop math and standard formulas.
- Perform duties from building plans, blueprints, and sketches, to plan and lay out the routing, placement, slant, slope, fall, and proper operation, of systems and equipment, as well as uses tools and equipment such as plumb bobs, mercury gauges, dividers, closet augers, hydrostatic pumps, and lead pots.
- Responsible for interpreting the following. measuring, cutting, constructing, installing, repairing and modifying routine mill work, framing, benches, partitions, tables, furniture, etc., from blueprints or instructions.
- Skilled in the use of all common electrical hand and power tools and testing equipment as required.
- Responsible for operate and use a wide variety of specialty woodworking machines and tools, as well as operate and use a variety of tools by setting-up, adjusting, and maintaining tools to meet required specifications.
- Responsible for selecting and safely using proper tools, devices, manuals, references and efficient procedures.
- Repaired/upgrade and defined required materials (bill of materials), tools and equipment requirements.
- Responsible for planning, measuring, and lay out carpentry materials using broad knowledge of wood materials and substitutes, with general and precision woodworking techniques.

Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). It is a requirement that all HCP to receive annual seasonal influenza vaccination or obtain an exemption for medical or religious reasons. Wearing a face mask is required when an exemption to the influenza vaccination has been granted.
HCP in violation of this directive may face disciplinary action up to and including removal from federal service. HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations or who come into contact with VA patients or other HCP as part of their duties.
VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased medical facilities.
HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, remote and onsite, paid and without compensation, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, researchers, volunteers and health professions trainees (HPTs) who are expected to perform any or all of their work at these facilities.
HPTs may be paid or unpaid and include residents, interns, fellows and students. HCP also includes VHA personnel providing home-based care to Veterans and drivers and other personnel whose duties put them in contact with patients outside VA medical facilities.
The Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP) and Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP) provide eligible displaced VA competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
