About the role

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. This position is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) and may have both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date.

What you will do

  • Provide fire protection and prevention practices to support the storage of approximately 800,000 gallons of highly combustible fuels and some 3000 different types of hazardous materials stored or in use.
  • Assist the injured by applying knowledge and training during medical emergencies.
  • Medical emergencies range in complexity from minor cuts and sprains to life threatening injuries or illnesses.
  • Perform general maintenance and care of assigned equipment to assure a constant state of readiness.
  • As a fully qualified Hazardous Materials Technician incumbent serves as a member of hazardous materials emergency response team using detection, identification, and monitoring equipment to identify hazardous products.

Education

EDUCATION CAN ONLY BE USED AT THE GS-04 AND GS-05 LEVEL.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

  • DoD Certificates and NREMT License : You MUST submit a copy of the following: Firefighter I/II, HAZMAT Awareness/Operations/Technician, Driver Operator-Pumper, Driver Operator-ARFF, Airport Firefighter, Basic Life Support (BLS), and Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B). certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) AND a State or National Registry EMT License.
  • If your application package does not contain proof of having these certificates and license, your application will be marked as incomplete and you WILL NOT receive consideration for this position.
  • Rather than submitting individual DoD certificates, if you have received a Student ID# for the DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification Program website (***) you may provide a copy of your most recent certification transcript.
  • If you do not know your Student ID, you may contact the AFCEC Reach-back Center at *** for assistance.
  • Rather than submitting your EMT License, you may print proof of your current EMT License with NREMT from their website (***).
  • If you are a current federal employee and do not have one of the required certificates due to the DoD F&ES Certification Program delay - You may submit a provisional certificate, memorandum from the Fire Chief requesting the certificates, and/or another document showing completion of the course.
  • PLEASE NOTE: If selected, you will not be placed into the position until the official certificate has been received from the DoD F&ES Certificate Program.
  • Other supporting documents: Cover Letter, optional Most recent Performance Appraisal, if applicable Proof of Age: As this is a primary/rigorous firefighter position, your application package MUST include a government issued document indicating your date of birth.

  • This position allows for substitution of education for experience GS-4 and 5 ONLY.
