This position is located at the Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California.

What you will do

  • This is a bargaining unit position.

  • The incumbent operates a tract-mounted excavator with an operating weight of 45,000 lbs.
  • 128 HP diesel engine, left and right control joy sticks, foot pedal controls, digging depth to 12 feet to excavate grave sites.
  • Incumbent operates front-end loader, backhoes with 75 and 124 HP diesel engines with multi-lever hand and foot pedal controls.
  • Operates miscellaneous industrial tractors with the attachments, full size road grader and other smaller equipment used to excavate, manipulate and move large amounts of soil.
  • The equipment is operated with receiving devices tuned to a laser beam for correct depth and leveling to establish or maintain grade.
  • Operates close to trees, drop-offs. or other obstructions.
  • Operator must be skilled in the safe economical and efficient use of specialized equipment such as buckets, blades, and other attachments to accomplish interment and renovation activities.
  • Incumbent performs operator's maintenance on assigned equipment and assures equipment cleanliness. assists with minor repairs as required.
  • The incumbent works a majority of the time excavating and constructing new pre-set crypt fields at the cemetery and is the primary worker performing this task.
  • The incumbent has the responsibility of acting work leader. as required based upon workload, for different work sections in the interment, pre-set crypt project. or marker section.
  • May lead up to (3) WG-8 Equipment Operators, (4) Truck drivers or Motor Vehicle drivers WG-5 through WG-7 and Cemetery Caretaker WG-2-WG-6 as required.
  • Under normal conditions, the lead responsibilities will extend to 6 or less employees during any one assignment.
  • Classifiers Note: The Engineering Equipment Operator, WG-5716 is the grade controlling portion of the job.
  • A work leader over the positions listed above would be one grade above the highest position led.
  • (WG-8 Equipment Operator, Work Leader would be classified WG-9).
  • Work schedule: May be required to work Monday through Friday to include occasional weekends.
  • Due to the mission of the National Cemetery, the cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time.
  • Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday.
  • All staff is required to work Memorial Day each year.
  • Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery.
  • Occasionally staff may be called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work.
