About the role

This position is located on the Resource Inventory and Assessment Staff in a state, area, or field office of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The mission of NRCS is to provide leadership in a partnership effort to help people conserve, maintain and improve their natural resources and environment.

What you will do

  • Ensures quality and quantity of work, reviews work of subordinate and accepts, revises or reject work Carries out field investigations and produces professional quality cultural resources investigation and assessment reports.
  • Identifies necessary cultural resources studies, develops specifications for scopes of work, determines cultural and scientific significance of identified resources in accordance with the guidelines and national Register of Historic Places criteria.
  • Prepares technical cultural resource sections of contracts, environmental documents, agreement documents and other instruments of agency intent.
  • Prepares and maintains all technical guides and information dealing with cultural resources.
  • Keeps abreast of developments and research in Archeological methods and procedures.

Requirements

  • You must be a US Citizen or US National.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.

  • As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period unless previous federal service is creditable.
  • During this time your employment will be evaluated, and we may consider: your performance and conduct, the needs and interests of the agency, whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government, and whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service.
  • Upon completion of your probationary period your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.
  • Subject to one year supervisory/managerial probationary period unless prior service is creditable.
  • New USDA supervisors must successfully complete all components of the required training program before the end of their probationary period.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state motor vehicle operator's license for the type of vehicle(s) operated to perform the duties of this position.

Applications will be evaluated in accordance with Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) Delegated Examining Procedures and USDA policy. This means you will be evaluated based on how well you meet the qualifications listed in this vacancy announcement.

Physical Demands: Approximately one-half of the work is sedentary with occasional walking or bending. The other half (field assignments) may require considerable walking, climbing, and digging or other physical exertion.

Work Environment: The work environment is variable. In the office, the work is primarily performed in a normal setting. Occasionally, field assignments may involve exposure to extreme weather conditions.
