About the role

The Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist (VRS) position is located in the Community Engagement and Reintegration Service (CERS), within the Veteran Community Employee Development (VCED) department, of the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare system (VAGLAHS). The incumbent is assigned vocational rehabilitation duties throughout the hospital, its clinics, and within the community.

The Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist falls under the auspices of the Compensated Work Therapy (CWT) programs.

What you will do

  • Determines the vocational goals and objectives of the Veteran based on referral from a professional staff member or by interviewing the Veteran.
  • Determines the areas of vocational interests, and decides what services such as job seeking skills training, resume development, or interview skills training the Veteran may require in order to successfully obtain suitable employment.
  • Counsels and guides Veterans through difficult transition in the adjustment to employment.
  • Coordinates with various resources to locate a training facility in the community that will be specifically suitable from the standpoint of the particular needs and problems of the individual.
  • Helps the employer to understand the nature of the Veteran's limitations while maintaining a positive impression of the Veteran's capability to succeed.
  • Networks with community employers, community agencies, and community businesses with the goal of developing professional relationships with these groups in order to assist program participants in obtaining and maintaining suitable community employment.
  • May be assigned other administrative duties as needed to advance the Compensated Work Therapy programs, such as preparation for Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) surveys.

What to expect next

It is a requirement that all HCP to receive annual seasonal influenza vaccination or obtain an exemption for medical or religious reasons. Wearing a face mask is required when an exemption to the influenza vaccination has been granted. HCP in violation of this directive may face disciplinary action up to and including removal from federal service.

HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations or who come into contact with VA patients or other HCP as part of their duties. VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased medical facilities.

HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, remote and onsite, paid and without compensation, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, researchers, volunteers and health professions trainees (HPTs) who are expected to perform any or all of their work at these facilities.

HPTs may be paid or unpaid and include residents, interns, fellows and students. HCP also includes VHA personnel providing home-based care to Veterans and drivers and other personnel whose duties put them in contact with patients outside VA medical facilities.

Additional information

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience.
