About the role

This position is located in a Youth Regional Treatment Center (YRTC). YRTC provides residential substance abuse and alcohol treatment to eligible American Indian and Alaska Native youth.

The purpose of this position is to serve as the Supervisory Recreation Specialist responsible for the leadership, coordination, and oversight of recreation and cultural services across both CALYRTC facilities. A REAL ID will be required beginning May 7, 2025, in accordance with 6 C.F.R. 37.5 (2021).

What you will do

  • Serves as first-line supervisor over Recreation Specialists assigned to Desert Sage Youth Wellness Center and Sacred Oaks Healing Center.
  • Provides coaching, mentoring, and workforce development to subordinate staff, fostering a collaborative, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed work environment.
  • Performs recreation, wellness, and cultural engagement duties at the same level as subordinate Recreation Specialists, applying knowledge of recreation principles, concepts, and techniques to the needs of the residential treatment population.
  • Maintains working relationships with Tribal governments, Tribal Elders, Traditional Practitioners, Urban Indian Organizations, schools, and community organizations to support culturally responsive programming.
  • Monitors expenditures for recreation, wellness, and cultural services within the approved budget and recommends procurement priorities for equipment, supplies, and program resources, ensuring responsible stewardship of government property.
  • Supports implementation of recreation, wellness, cultural engagement, and recovery-support initiatives associated with California's Medicaid 1115 Demonstration and IHS behavioral health priorities, in coordination with interdisciplinary leadership.

Additional information

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service.

This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. This position is ineligible for the Bargaining Unit. Recruitment or relocation incentives may be authorized.
