Organizational Location: This position is located within the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Operations Support, Law Enforcement Safety and Compliance Directorate; Training Branch in Harpers Ferry, WV or Summit Point, WV. What you will do

  • This position supports this mission in the capacity of an Assistant Director within a LESC Training Branch.
  • This position will allow you to use your expertise to prevent illegal entry of aliens into the United States by land, water, or air; enforce criminal provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Laws; and seek out and apprehend smugglers or aliens who are in the United States illegally.

  • This position starts at a salary of $147,899.00 (GS-14, Step 1) to $192,275.00 (GS-14, Step 10).
  • Duties include but are not limited to: Directing staff responsible for training and formulating, developing, and resolving use of force policy within Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and is responsible for developing and implementing a service wide training program for CBP law enforcement personnel.
  • Providing input into local and national policies and directives and is responsible for questions arising from within CBP regarding use of force policy and training.
  • Formulating recommendations leading to the revision of current curricula or the development of new courses.
  • Supporting field training requirements by developing and preparing exportable training programs, such as videos, lesson plans, and study materials.
  • Supervisory Probationary Period: You may be required to serve an 18-month probationary period upon appointment.
  • Leadership Training: All newly appointed second level supervisors are required to complete mandatory Advanced Supervisory Leadership Training (ASLT).
  • The training will be scheduled by the Office of Training and Development within the first 90 days of appointment.
  • The duration of the training will include (4) weeks of in-residence training in Harpers Ferry, WV.
  • Note: This training may be waived if previously completed.

  • Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC): You must have successfully completed relevant Federal law enforcement training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) prior to entry into this position.
  • Entry-level training for Air and Marine Agents, Border Patrol Agents and Criminal Investigators meets this requirement.
  • Law Enforcement Availability Pay (LEAP): You must be readily accessible to work on an unscheduled basis in excess of a 40-hour work week and will receive extra compensation.
  • Security Clearance: You may be required to obtain a Secret or higher level clearance for this position.

Qualified U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) candidates will be ranked on the basis of the scores received on your Air and Marine Promotional Assessment. Competitive applicants must have a valid test score when the announcement opens, or we cannot consider you for this position. Alternate Staffing (Non-Competitive) Candidates need not have a current, valid test score.

This self-assessment will be used to assess the following competencies or knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) needed to perform this job are: Knowledge of an experienced law enforcement officer needed to deal with criminal enforcement activities peculiar to DHS or its components.

Knowledge of enforcement and investigative techniques, methods, functions, operations and procedures in order to supervise law enforcement activities that gather evidence for criminal prosecution. Skill in the performance of enforcement and investigative activities, including the investigation, detention and apprehension of violators of DHS and related laws.
