Main duties

  • Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional The incumbent provides social work services and case management services for Veterans with behavioral health diagnoses as an integral part of the outpatient Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP) team.
  • As a member of a BHIP team, the incumbent will conduct psychosocial assessments, provide crisis intervention, and evidence-based psychotherapy (e.g. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), etc.) Provision of Social Work Services Incumbent will provide triage assessment, crisis intervention, brief counseling, and evidence­-based individual and group psychotherapy for Veterans with a broad spectrum of diagnoses, including depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma related conditions, substance abuse conditions, and personality disorders.
  • Incumbent will provide same day access for Veterans seeking to initiate care and will also provide assertive community outreach for Suicide Prevention.
  • Incumbent sets clinical care goals in collaboration with the patient, monitors progress toward goals, and works to achieve outcomes, including reduced hospitalizations.

About the role

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program.

You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.

Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

  • Incumbent recognizes complex situations that impact patient care and intervenes, using sound judgment and appropriate resources.
  • Incumbent has knowledge of community and VA resources, and makes appropriate referrals to programs in order to best meet Veterans' needs and coordinate Veterans' care.
  • Incumbent advocates on behalf of the Veteran to ensure that services and benefits are obtained in a timely manner and in keeping with the VA's goals for excellence in customer service.
  • The incumbent effectively utilizes electronic resources required for providing services and completing reports.
  • These include, but are not limited to, electronic medical health record (EMHR), CPRS, VISTA, Microsoft Word, workload reporting, and program referral procedures.
  • Incumbent documents work appropriately and in a timely manner in the medical record.
  • Enriching Elements Incumbent provides education and consultation to staff, students, patients, and families regarding programs and serves as a point of contact for the community for these programs.
  • Incumbent remains current on VA policies and procedures relevant to program areas.
  • Incumbent works with team to meet goals and performance measures within program.
  • Incumbent may provide training opportunities to various disciplines.
  • Incumbent may participate in the training of Social Work Students.
  • Other Significant Responsibilities Incumbent will attend appropriate team meetings (Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program huddles and meetings, Behavioral Health/Recovery Services, social work, etc.) and work closely with patients' providers and other team members to effectively coordinate care.
  • Incumbent establishes collaborative relationships with behavioral health providers particularly, as well as other team members and staff outside the department in order to more effectively coordinate patients' care.
  • Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm.
  • EDRP Authorized: Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply for incentive.

  • When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
  • Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year).
  • Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience.
  • Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
  • Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations or who come into contact with VA patients or other HCP as part of their duties. VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased medical facilities.

HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, remote and onsite, paid and without compensation, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, researchers, volunteers and health professions trainees (HPTs) who are expected to perform any or all of their work at these facilities.

HPTs may be paid or unpaid and include residents, interns, fellows and students. HCP also includes VHA personnel providing home-based care to Veterans and drivers and other personnel whose duties put them in contact with patients outside VA medical facilities.

Additional information

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience.

This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
