Main duties

  • This position falls under the direction of the Investigations Division Headquarters Office, Operations Branch I.
  • If you are selected for the Senior Criminal Investigator position, your responsibilities would include, but would not be limited to: Serve as the Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) responsible for oversight of all criminal and administrative investigations related to all assigned components within the Department of Justice, to include, but not limited to, the U.S. Marshal's Service, and the U.S. Attorney's Offices, Office of Justice Programs, and Executive Office for Immigration Review.
  • Serves as technical expert in the exercise of federal law enforcement with skills and competency to serve as a primary consultant to other investigators on a wide variety of investigative techniques.
  • Plans and executes liaison operations with the Offices of Professional Responsibility of the components within the investigative oversight of the DOJ Components.

About the role

The Office of the Inspector General is one of the best places to work in the Department of Justice and is one of the premier inspector general offices in federal government. The Investigations Division (INV) investigates alleged criminal violations and misconduct that govern DOJ employees, operations, grantees, and contractors.

Annually INV receives more than 13,000 complaints, opens approximately 250 investigations, and makes an average of over 90 arrests.

What you will do

  • This position falls under the direction of the Investigations Division Headquarters Office, Operations Branch I.
  • If you are selected for the Senior Criminal Investigator position, your responsibilities would include, but would not be limited to: Serve as the Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) responsible for oversight of all criminal and administrative investigations related to all assigned components within the Department of Justice, to include, but not limited to, the U.S. Marshal's Service, and the U.S. Attorney's Offices, Office of Justice Programs, and Executive Office for Immigration Review.
  • Serves as technical expert in the exercise of federal law enforcement with skills and competency to serve as a primary consultant to other investigators on a wide variety of investigative techniques.
  • Plans and executes liaison operations with the Offices of Professional Responsibility of the components within the investigative oversight of the DOJ Components.
  • Provides oversight and quality control of the receipt and disposition of allegations and the investigative activity and reports of investigation.
  • Reviews reports of investigation (criminal and noncriminal) relating to the assigned DOJ components for compliance with policy and procedures and applicable standards and format.
  • Ensures all aspects of an allegation have been properly investigated and documented; identifies programmatic weakness in the investigative reporting process.
  • Plans, organizes, and personally conducts investigations with regard to a wide variety of allegations received by the Office of the Inspector General.

You will be assessed on the following competencies (knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics): Technical Competence including ability to plan, organize, and conduct extremely sensitive and complex criminal investigations, including those related to bribery of public officials, misconduct, theft, contract/grant fraud, conflicts of interest, and civil rights violations.

Communication including ability to communicate investigative findings orally and in writing Criminal Investigation including ability to serve as an investigative authority Selective Placement Factor: Criminal Investigator Training Program (CITP) graduate at Federal Law Enforcement Training Center or equivalent federal criminal investigator training completion USAHire Assessment: Applicants will be required to complete a USAHire Assessment.
