About the role

About the Position: This position is located within Brooke Army Medical Center, Vision Readiness, Optical Fabrications located at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

The primary purpose of this position is to perform work in all phases of a full service Optical Fabrication Laboratory, where single vision and multifocal prescription eyewear such as eyeglasses, sunglasses, ballistic eyewear, flight goggles, gas mask inserts are fabricated and/or repaired on a production line basis.

What you will do

• Perform work on a rotating basis in all phases of a full-service Optical Fabrication Laboratory.
• Interpret spectacle prescriptions showing eyewear specifications such as pupillary distance, temple length, eye size, cylinder power and sphere power, axis and similar data.
• Operate lens generator to achieve desired lens characteristics to avoid lens breakage while maintaining desired cylinder, sphere curves, and thickness.
• Applies optical theory to a wide variety of complex optical process to ensure proper requirements are met.
• Perform final inspection of a wide variety of finished eyewear for possible flaws or faulty workmanship.

This is a Medical Career Program position aligned under the Installation Career Management Directorate. Selection is subject to restrictions resulting from Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees.
