Physician-Endocrinologist Chief

About the role

Perform other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Chief of Medicine or other VA leadership, in support of the medical center's mission and goals.

• Provide direct patient care for inpatients and outpatients with actual or presumed endocrinologic problems, including specialized care for transgender Veterans.
• Perform thyroid fine needle aspiration procedures.
• Order, supervise, and interpret all standard and specialized endocrinologic laboratory and imaging tests.
• Practice patient-centered medical care, integrating both the art and science of medicine.
• Deliver high-value, cost-effective, and team-based medical care.
• Utilize palliative and hospice services and principles as clinically indicated.
• Teach and mentor medical students, residents, and other health profession trainees rotating on the Endocrinology or related services.
• Participate in clinical research, scholarly pursuits, and other academic activities as assigned, in collaboration with VA and affiliated academic institutions.
• Participate in hospital and medical staff functions, including but not limited to accreditation requirements, quality assessment, quality improvement projects, committee assignments, EPRP activities, Lean, ORYX, HEDIS, and SAIL measures.
• Function in accordance with VA standards for consult management, use of clinical order sets, documentation in the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS), and all other requirements of the VA electronic medical record system.
• Collaborate effectively within the VA's large, complex organizational structure, which includes engaging and cooperating with services such as community care, prosthetics, medical administration, medical records, group medical practice, and other multidisciplinary teams.

Requirements

• U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Education

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed.

Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted. Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted.

For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, confirmation must be made that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirement for year graduated. NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C.

7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
