About the role

The Iowa City Veterans Affairs Health Care System (ICVAHCS) is seeking a full-time Physician Assistant to join the Mental Health Service Line at the VA Clinic in Coralville IA . Note: This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT through September 17, 2026. The first referral cut-off is July 16, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. EST, with monthly cut-offs on the 1st.

What you will do

  • The Mental Health Physician Assistant conducts medication management of individuals who present with primarily psychiatric illnesses and concerns, however, collaboration with other medical services for patients with other medical concerns may be necessary.
  • Incumbent will be asked to utilize therapeutic techniques in addition to the usage of medication to assist in the care of the patient.
  • Incumbent will also be asked to treat walk-in patients in Primary Care, Specialty Clinics and Emergency Department as well as for patients known to Mental Health Service.
  • Incumbent will be asked to assess patients to determine appropriateness of care, including the utilization of inpatient psychiatric care as well as outpatient care or psychiatric collaborative care while admitted to medical/surgical inpatient.
  • All clinical activities will be consistent with the incumbent's specific clinic privileges.
  • Clinical duties include medical evaluation of patients.
  • When engaged in psychodiagnostic evaluation, incumbent conducts and documents clinical interviews.
  • Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met.
  • Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
  • Education Debt Reduction Program (Student Loan Repayment): This position may be eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program.
  • You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.
  • Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

What to expect next

It is a requirement that all HCP to receive annual seasonal influenza vaccination or obtain an exemption for medical or religious reasons. Wearing a face mask is required when an exemption to the influenza vaccination has been granted. HCP in violation of this directive may face disciplinary action up to and including removal from federal service.

HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations or who come into contact with VA patients or other HCP as part of their duties. VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased medical facilities.

HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, remote and onsite, paid and without compensation, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, researchers, volunteers and health professions trainees (HPTs) who are expected to perform any or all of their work at these facilities.

HPTs may be paid or unpaid and include residents, interns, fellows and students. HCP also includes VHA personnel providing home-based care to Veterans and drivers and other personnel whose duties put them in contact with patients outside VA medical facilities.
