What you will do

• You will serve as a PHYSICAL SCIENCE TECHNICIAN in the RADIOLOGICAL MONITORING DIVISION (CODE 105.3) of the RADIOLOGICAL CONTROL OFFICE (CODE 105) located in KITTERY, ME.
• You will overhaul and refuel nuclear powered vessels, in a wide range of radiological control operations.
• You will assure adherence to radiological control requirements for assignments which involve numerous processes in several high skill level trades.
• You will serve as a major radiological control representative in "dry run" planning, practice, or "mock-up" sessions in preparation for major repairs and overhaul or refueling operations.
• You will take charge of response to radiation related emergencies and incidents until replaced by a senior radiological control supervisor or manager.

Education

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Applicants may substitute the following education for the required experience, provided it demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position: GS-10: NOT APPLICABLE GS-9: Successful completion of a master's degree OR Successful completion of two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree GS-8: Successful completion of one and a half years of graduate education leading to a master's degree GS-7: Successful completion of one full year of graduate level education COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be combined to meet the total qualification requirements.

Additional information

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program. Work involves performing work operations in lifts, on staging in ships, in dry-docks, and under adverse weather conditions which require significant attention to personnel safety.

Work involves frequent, strenuous activities such as climbing vertical ladders, staging, or scaffolding in dry-docks and vessel areas; working in cramped quarters undergoing repair; and working in areas where footing may be insecure. Work requires long intervals of sitting and intense concentration for maintaining radiological controls.

Lighter activities such as lifting and carrying items up to 50 pounds; frequent bending, reaching, stooping, and crouching; and walking over rough areas also are performed. Incumbent may be assigned to work areas where certain potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present.

These agents may include, but are not limited to, fumes, dust, noise, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals.

Incumbent is responsible for following and enforcing all established safety rules and requirements, staying informed of all safety and health requirements pertinent to his/her work assignments, ensuring all applicable safety equipment is available for task assignment, and taking prompt corrective action to abate hazardous workplace conditions.

The incumbent must ensure that all requirements and guidance pertinent to the storage, use, and disposal of hazardous materials are fully understood and followed by the workforce. Overtime may be required to support the radiological controls department as needed. Work may require some travel.
