About the role

You will serve as a Park Ranger with US Fish and Wildlife Service for the Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge. As a Park Ranger, GS-0025-7, you will participate in the development, management, and implementation of a high quality and balanced visitor services (VS) program by recommending and implementing compatible wildlife- dependent recreation activities.

First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the step 1 rate.

  • As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you may be required to serve a 1-year probationary period to evaluate your fitness and whether your continuation of employment advances the public interest.
  • This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service.
  • In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider: your performance and conduct; the needs and interests of the agency; whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; and whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service.
  • Under applicable law, the employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies, in writing, that the individual's employment should continue and that their appointment should be finalized.

Education

How you will be evaluated

Your qualifications will be evaluated based on your application materials (e.g. resume, supporting documents), the responses you provide on the application questionnaire, and the result of the additional assessment(s) required for this position. To be considered for this position, you must complete all required steps in the process. Your resume must not exceed 2 pages.

You will be assessed in the following competencies (knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics): Knowledge of interpretive concepts and techniques using a variety of media and ability to convey effective interpretive messages to the public and to train others to do the same.

Knowledge of conservation and natural resource management principles and practices in order to incorporate them in educational programs, exhibits, and other visitor services programs. Knowledge of Service and refuge policies, regulations, standards, and procedures applicable to the Volunteer and Visitor Services programs.

Skill communicating with a variety of audiences and public groups using various communications media. Knowledge of a diverse range of outdoor facilities such as trails, visitor centers, campgrounds, and wayside exhibits and how they are adopted into an interpretive program. Basic maintenance skills needed to perform minor repairs to structures.

The incumbent will travel for on-site visits requiring some physical exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven or rocky terrain; bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, lifting, or similar activities. The work requires average agility and dexterity. The job is mainly indoors with some travel outside to field stations.

The office environment will have adequate heating and lighting. The incumbent may experience slight discomfort in the field with varying weather conditions.

Current or former displaced Federal employees who are surplus, displaced, or involuntarily separated have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP).
