Additional information
PARK & AREA INFORMATION: Big Hole National Battlefield preserves the site of the Battle of the Big Hole, fought August 9-10, 1877, between the nimípu (Nez Perce) and the U.S. Army and civilian volunteers. Today, the battlefield is a place of remembrance, honoring those who fought and died here.
As one of 38 sites associated with Nez Perce National Historical Park, a park about a people, for all people, Big Hole offers a unique opportunity to interpret a complex chapter of American history and help visitors connect with the people, events, and enduring power of this place. The 655-acre park includes a visitor center and approximately three miles of trails.
Our small, close-knit team works with Tribal partners and staff across three national park units. While most visitors arrive during the summer, our work continues year-round through educational programming, interpretive planning, partnerships, and resource stewardship.
Living in the Big Hole Valley - Located approximately 10 miles west of Wisdom, Montana, the battlefield is surrounded by mountains, national forests, and wide-open spaces. The area offers opportunities for hiking, fishing, camping, skiing, and other outdoor recreation.
Wisdom is a small agricultural community with basic amenities, while larger communities and shopping are approximately 65 miles or more away. Local housing options are limited, cell service can be unreliable, and public transportation is unavailable. Summers are short, and winters are long, cold, and snowy.
Life in the Big Hole Valley requires some preparation and self-sufficiency but offers beautiful scenery, outdoor recreation, and a small rural community. Additional vacancies may be filled using this job announcement. First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the step 1 rate.
The duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster with supervisory approval.
