  • This position is located in the Office of the Associate Director for Training Ops (TOPS), Training Management Operations Directorate (TMO), Office of Charleston Operations (CHS), Maritime and General Training Branch (MGT), located in North Charleston, South Carolina.
  • The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Marine Machinery Mechanic responsible for troubleshooting, disassembling, reassembling, installing, adjusting, modifying, maintaining, repairing, and testing complex marine engines and related equipment.
  • Typical duties include: Troubleshooting, disassembling, repairing, reassembling, installing, adjusting, and testing complex gasoline and diesel marine engines, propulsion machinery, generators, pumps, fuel, bilge, hydraulic steering, trim, and related vessel systems using technical manuals, work orders, onboard engine computers, diagnostic equipment, test instruments, and accepted trade practices.

What you will do

  • Serving as a Marine Machinery Mechanic WG-5334-10 makes you a valuable member of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) team and mission.
  • This position is located in the Office of the Associate Director for Training Ops (TOPS), Training Management Operations Directorate (TMO), Office of Charleston Operations (CHS), Maritime and General Training Branch (MGT), located in North Charleston, South Carolina.
  • The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Marine Machinery Mechanic responsible for troubleshooting, disassembling, reassembling, installing, adjusting, modifying, maintaining, repairing, and testing complex marine engines and related equipment.
  • Typical duties include: Troubleshooting, disassembling, repairing, reassembling, installing, adjusting, and testing complex gasoline and diesel marine engines, propulsion machinery, generators, pumps, fuel, bilge, hydraulic steering, trim, and related vessel systems using technical manuals, work orders, onboard engine computers, diagnostic equipment, test instruments, and accepted trade practices.
  • Performing preventive and corrective maintenance on marine vessels and associated components, including motor systems, fluids, filters, water pumps, thermostats, sacrificial anodes, sensors, relays, propellers, lower units, lighting systems, fuel tanks, vents, safety devices, gauges, alarms, and emergency response equipment.
  • Installing, removing, diagnosing, repairing, and replacing vessel electronic and communication/navigation systems, including radar, sonar, GPS, AIS, VHF distress radio systems, transducers, control components, and related equipment.
  • Inspecting, maintaining, and repairing vessel trailers, including brake systems, lighting systems, tires, bearings, couplers, and bunks, and ensure assigned boats, trailers, and related equipment meet safety, operational, and compliance requirements.

If met, we will use multiple assessments to place you in 1 of 3 categories demonstrating the following competencies: If you meet the minimum qualifications, you will be placed in one of the following categories: Best-Qualified: Applicants possessing experience that substantially exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position and demonstrate high proficiency in all of the critical competencies, including all Selective Placement Factors (SPF), and appropriate Quality Ranking Factors (QRF) as determined by the job analysis (JA).

Well-Qualified: Applicants possessing experience that exceeds the min. quals of the position and demonstrates acceptable proficiency in all of the critical competencies, including all SPF's and appropriate QRFs as determined by the JA.

Qualified: Applicants possessing experience that meets the min. quals of the position and demonstrate basic proficiency in most of the critical competencies, including all SPFs and appropriate QRFs as determined by the JA. If you are best qualified, you may be referred to the hiring manager for consideration and may be called for an interview.

This review may include financial issues such as delinquency in the payment of debts, child support and/or tax obligations, as well as certain criminal offenses and illegal use or possession of drugs. Physical Effort: Make repairs which often require them to work in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions.

They frequently stand for long periods of time, bend, stoop, crawl under vehicles, and make repairs in other tight spaces. They frequently lift, handle, and carry parts and equipment weighing up to 40 lbs. Working Conditions: Servicing of equipment may be performed in shop or on-site.

Most work is done outside under cover or on-site at a dock where other vessels are usually present. Frequently stands on hard surfaces for long periods of time. Crawls under and over vessels and makes repairs while on hard, usually damp surfaces.

Performs repairs outside, sometimes in bad weather. Dirt, dust, and grease are always present. Vessel fluids, such as battery acids and hydraulic fluids, may cause burns or irritate the skin.

Frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts, bruises, shocks, burns, and strains.
