About the role
As a member of a Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program team {BHIP), the incumbent will conduct psychosocial assessments, provide crisis intervention, clinical case management, and evidence-based psychotherapy (e.g. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy {CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy {ACT), Problem Solving Therapy {PST), Cognitive Processing Therapy {CPT), etc.) as well as work with the Veteran and the BHIP team to establish treatment plans.

- The incumbent sets clinical care goals in collaboration with the patient, monitors progress toward goals, and works to achieve outcomes, including reduced hospitalizations.
- Incumbent attends appropriate team meetings (Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Programs huddles and meetings, Behavioral Health/Recovery Services, social work etc.) and works closely with patients' providers and other team members to effectively coordinate care.
- Incumbent establishes collaborative relationships with mental health providers particularly, as well as other team members and staff outside the department in order to more effectively coordinate patients' care.
- Incumbent has knowledge and experience in use of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities and treatment procedures.
- This includes acute, chronic and traumatic illnesses/injuries, common medications and their effects/side effects, and medical terminology.
- Incumbent has knowledge of community and VA resources, and makes appropriate referrals to programs in order to best meet Veterans' needs and coordinate Veterans' care.
- Incumbent advocates on behalf of the Veteran to ensure that services and benefits are obtained in a timely manner and in keeping with the VA's goals for excellence in customer service.
- Incumbent provides education and consultation to staff, students, patients, and families regarding programs and serves as a point of contact for the community for these programs.
- Incumbent remains current on VA policies and procedures relevant to program areas.
- Incumbent works with team to meet goals and performance measures within program, including Noninstitutional Care measures.
- Knowledge and understanding of existing relevant statutes, case laws, ethical codes, and regulations affecting professional practice of counseling.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with people from varied backgrounds.
- The incumbent is required to attend Ambulatory Care Center administrative and professional meetings as directed.
- Provide supervision to lower graded counselors requiring clinical supervision.

HCP in violation of this directive may face disciplinary action up to and including removal from federal service.
HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations or who come into contact with VA patients or other HCP as part of their duties. VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased medical facilities.
HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, remote and onsite, paid and without compensation, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, researchers, volunteers and health professions trainees (HPTs) who are expected to perform any or all of their work at these facilities.
HPTs may be paid or unpaid and include residents, interns, fellows and students. HCP also includes VHA personnel providing home-based care to Veterans and drivers and other personnel whose duties put them in contact with patients outside VA medical facilities.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
