About the role

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program.

You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.

Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.

What you will do

  • Responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care.
  • Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates care based on age specific components.
  • Assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient education, self-management, and customer satisfaction throughout the continuum of care.
  • Administers medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines.
  • Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex client care.
  • The Inpatient Mental Health (MH) Registered Nurse (RN) executes their position duties to improve patient and organizational outcomes by providing patient-centered and recovery oriented care, maintaining self-awareness while caring for patients living with MH conditions, and managing the milieu.
  • The nurse facilitates shift reports, warm hand-offs, and develops content as well as facilitates nurse-led psychoeducational groups.
  • They use therapeutic communication techniques, practice de-escalation techniques, and utilize recovery-oriented language.
  • The nurse actively participates in MH interdisciplinary treatment team, MH Environment of Care rounds, directs team response to psychiatric emergencies, reports safety concerns, and assists in safety concern resolution.
  • The nurse documents nursing assessments, nursing plan of care, patient safety observations, and environmental safety rounds according to facility policy.
  • The nurse maintains professional boundaries to protect patient vulnerabilities and act in the best interest of the patient.
  • Collaborates in the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision of policies, procedures, and/or guidelines.
  • Demonstrates performance and leadership that is broad enough to improve the care for MH patients.
  • Provides peers with formal or informal constructive feedback for improvement.
  • Fosters a safe and supportive environment conducive to the professional development of health care professionals.
  • Evaluates MH outcomes of evidence-based decisions and practice changes for individuals, groups, and populations.
  • Responsible for the documented MH outcomes at the program or service level.
  • Program or service level outcomes must be broad and complex and can be demonstrated at any organizational level within a facility.
  • The RN will demonstrate competency by utilizing the nursing process not only on an individual level but as a unit/team.
  • Will demonstrate leadership by involving others in the improvement of care.
  • They will support the client in self-demonstration and act as a patient advocate.
  • Serves as a resource on ethical issues, serve as a preceptor or mentor, participate in quality improvement activities and will participate in education activities to improve their role and expertise.
  • Able to evaluate self and others using professional standards and will take action to improve performance as an individual and as a unit/team.
  • The RN will use group process to identify, analyze, research and resolve care problems within their unit.
  • Functions in a charge nurse role as needed and will act as a team player and assist other units as needed.

Requirements

  • Demonstrate recent experience providing direct patient care in an inpatient mental health or psychiatric setting, including crisis intervention, de-escalation, and management of acute behavioral health symptoms.
  • Proven ability to perform comprehensive mental health assessments, develop individualized care plans, monitor patient progress, and accurately document in the electronic health record using accepted clinical and regulatory standards.
  • Strong interpersonal and therapeutic communication skills, with the ability to establish rapport and build trust with patients experiencing severe mental illness, while maintaining professional boundaries and promoting adherence to treatment plans.
  • Experience working effectively within a multidisciplinary team, collaborating with psychiatrists, social workers, psychologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient-centered care.
  • Ability to rapidly recognize and appropriately intervene in psychiatric emergencies or escalating behaviors, utilizing evidence-based and trauma-informed practices to ensure the safety of patients and staff. U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased medical facilities.

HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, remote and onsite, paid and without compensation, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, researchers, volunteers and health professions trainees (HPTs) who are expected to perform any or all of their work at these facilities.

HPTs may be paid or unpaid and include residents, interns, fellows and students. HCP also includes VHA personnel providing home-based care to Veterans and drivers and other personnel whose duties put them in contact with patients outside VA medical facilities.
