About the role
The Primary Purpose of the Position is: The Health Technician-Massage Therapist at the full performance level is responsible to perform massage therapy services in a complex and variable patient population.
The Organizational Location of the Position is: Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Service, in the Outpatient clinic at Dallas Campus, of the VA North Texas Health Care System (VANTHCS), Dallas, TX.
What you will do
- Coordinates Veteran schedule with other interdisciplinary team members.
- May review referrals to assess appropriatemess of massage therapy intervention.
- Reviews medical records to assess appropriateness of massage therapy intervention, to identify any potential risks or contraindications to massage therapy treatment and to assist in guiding the evaluation process.
- Conducts complex massage therapy assessments to general and specialty patient populations, utilizing standard patient evaluation procedures including structured interview, direct observation, standardized testing and medical record review to formulate a treatment plan.
- Coordinates follow up care as indicated per treatment plan.
- Provides a full range of complex treatment procedures and modalities.
- Provides massage therapy instruction for self-care to patient and family as determined appropriate.
- Educates patients on healthy lifestyle including hydration, basic nutrition, stretching, strengthening exercise, mind-body techniques, sleep habits, stress management, relaxation and other matters related to massage therapy care.
- Knowledge of complementary integrative health and holistic health principles.
- Responsible for mentoring other massage therapists and participating in educational activities.
- Knowledge of teaching methods and learning principles, and will assist other staff through education as a member of an interdisciplinary health care team.
- Mentors other staff in best massage therapy practices.
- Acts as subject matter expert on massage therapy and related body work services and will provide guidance when requested regarding purchased care.
- Provides patient care coverage to other PM&R clinics as needed.
- May participate in Process Improvement activities related to massage therapy and holistic care.
- Contributes to identifying, collecting, and analyzing aggregate patient care information, to ensure safety and quality of care.
- Knowledge of the processes for Reusable Medical Equipment (RME).
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

It is a requirement that all HCP to receive annual seasonal influenza vaccination or obtain an exemption for medical or religious reasons. Wearing a face mask is required when an exemption to the influenza vaccination has been granted. HCP in violation of this directive may face disciplinary action up to and including removal from federal service.
HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations or who come into contact with VA patients or other HCP as part of their duties. VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased medical facilities.
HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, remote and onsite, paid and without compensation, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, researchers, volunteers and health professions trainees (HPTs) who are expected to perform any or all of their work at these facilities.

Additional information
Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience.
