About the role

The Health System Specialist -Credentialing and Privileging Specialist is assigned to the Medical Staff Office, which is under the Chief of Staff at Syracuse VA Medical Center, Syracuse, NY and is responsible for providing administrative and technical direction and support to the credentialing and privileging (C&P) operations.

What you will do

  • The C&P Specialist is aligned to and supervised by the C&P Manager.
  • The incumbent ensures compliance with VHA policies, directives, memos and notices of The Joint Commission (TJC) standards, recommendations by the Office of Inspector General (OIG) and Government Accountability Office (GAO) and other internal or external auditors and reviewers as appropriate.
  • The incumbent is responsible for collecting relevant data and making informed decisions to ensure qualified health care professionals are providing appropriate care in appropriate settings.
  • Major duties include, but are not limited to: Performing as the subject matter expert (SME) to Licensed Independent Providers (LIPs) and Service Chiefs regarding routine and complex matters related to C&P.
  • Assisting the C&P Manager/Analyst in developing short- and long-term goals necessary to accomplish the mission of the C&P program.
  • Assisting the C&P Manager/Analyst in drafting local credentialing processes and Medical Staff Bylaws in compliance with all applicable regulations.
  • Receiving and reviewing VetPro reports detecting problem areas requiring further investigation.
  • Informing the C&P Manager/Analyst of trends identified, audit results and identified problems that may affect a provider's privilege status.
  • Providing guidance and instruction to hospital staff in completing the required documentation of establishing privileges for LIPs.
  • Assuring application packages and other documents meet technical requirements per specialty of provider and assures application folder and database account (VetPro or other internal databases and spreadsheets) meet technical requirements.
  • Serving as technical advisor to the Executive Committee of the Medical Staff (ECMS) and if applicable the Credentials Committee.
  • Developing and providing routine and special reports as requested by the C&P Manager/Analyst.
  • Establishing and maintains a variety of files and records pertaining to the C&P process.
  • Work Schedule: Monday to Friday 7:30am-4pm Virtual: This is not a virtual position.

  • Position Description Title/PD#: Health System Specialist (Credentialing and Privileging Specialist)/PD99876S Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met.
  • Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
  • NOTE: This position involves a multi-grade career ladder.
  • The major duties listed above represent the full performance level of GS-09.
  • At the GS-07 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence.
  • You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-09.

Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). It is a requirement that all HCP to receive annual seasonal influenza vaccination or obtain an exemption for medical or religious reasons. Wearing a face mask is required when an exemption to the influenza vaccination has been granted.

HCP in violation of this directive may face disciplinary action up to and including removal from federal service. HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations or who come into contact with VA patients or other HCP as part of their duties.

VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased medical facilities.

HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, remote and onsite, paid and without compensation, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, researchers, volunteers and health professions trainees (HPTs) who are expected to perform any or all of their work at these facilities.

HPTs may be paid or unpaid and include residents, interns, fellows and students. HCP also includes VHA personnel providing home-based care to Veterans and drivers and other personnel whose duties put them in contact with patients outside VA medical facilities.

The Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP) and Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP) provide eligible displaced VA competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
