About the role

This position is located in the Oklahoma City VA Health Care System in Facilities Management Service. The incumbent will perform installation, modifications, maintenance, testing, inspecting, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical distribution systems, wiring systems, fixtures, controls, and equipment in healthcare, industrial and office settings.

The position requires knowledge and application of electrical principles, materials, and safety standards.

What you will do

  • Major Duties Include: Installation, modification, repair, troubleshooting, maintenance and testing of complex electoral systems, circuits, equipment, appliances, controls, components, lighting fixtures and fire alarm systems.
  • Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing, placement, type size, gauge, balance, load continuity, and safe operating of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls.
  • Determines and places distribution panels, boxes, fittings, and connections and installs wiring, couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers and other electrical devices including electrical service entrances.
  • The work involves installing, modifying, repairing and maintaining electrical lines, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls and equipment.
  • Troubleshooting, testing, and loading new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems and associated fixtures, controls and equipment.
  • Plans and lays out work, tracing hard to locate defects or problems, and completes repairs and installations.
  • Interprets and applies the National Electrical Code, local codes, building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams and engineering drawings, and uses trade formulas to calculate common properties, e.g., voltage, voltage drop and current capability in series and parallel circuits, resistance, inductance, capacitance, power factor, current flow, and temperature and length in single and multiple raceways, conduits, gutters and cable trays.
  • Other duties as assigned Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Electrician/PD12037A Physical Requirements: The work requires frequently handling heavy materials and parts weighing in excess of 45 pounds.
  • The work also requires pulling, pushing, reaching, walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, bending, and climbing for sustained periods of time.
  • Physical effort is often strenuous and is typical of industrial construction trades.
  • Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside (heat, cold, under and outside of building).
  • Installations, inspections and repairs are made under dirty, noisy and odorous producing conditions.
  • He/she is frequently exposed to the danger of strains, cuts, bruises, burns, and infections

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). It is a requirement that all HCP to receive annual seasonal influenza vaccination or obtain an exemption for medical or religious reasons. Wearing a face mask is required when an exemption to the influenza vaccination has been granted.

HCP in violation of this directive may face disciplinary action up to and including removal from federal service. HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations or who come into contact with VA patients or other HCP as part of their duties.

VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased medical facilities.

HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, remote and onsite, paid and without compensation, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, researchers, volunteers and health professions trainees (HPTs) who are expected to perform any or all of their work at these facilities.

HPTs may be paid or unpaid and include residents, interns, fellows and students. HCP also includes VHA personnel providing home-based care to Veterans and drivers and other personnel whose duties put them in contact with patients outside VA medical facilities.

The Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP) and Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP) provide eligible displaced VA competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service.
