About the role
The Bureau of Consumer Protection works to protect consumers against unfair, deceptive, or fraudulent practices in the marketplace. The Bureau conducts investigations, sues companies and people who violate the law, develops rules to protect consumers, and educates consumers and businesses about their rights.
The Bureau also collects complaints about consumer fraud, unfair practices, and identity theft and makes them available to law enforcement agencies across the country.

- Duties include developing legal and economic theories, designing enforcement methods, and directing enforcement and rulemaking programs.
- The incumbent participates in meetings on proposals from divisions and regional offices, making legal and policy decisions on investigations, complaints, compulsory process requests, rulemaking, and civil penalty recommendations.
- Acting for the Director when necessary, the position resolves administrative and substantive matters, ensures efficient operations, and monitors overall program progress.
- Responsibilities include establishing mission goals, determining required resources, ensuring efficient use of funds and staff, and setting case priorities.
- The incumbent evaluates workforce allocation, monitors progress toward objectives, assesses effectiveness and productivity, identifies problem areas, and adjusts strategies as needed.
- The Deputy Director is central to ensuring effective use of Bureau resources and oversees a large staff through Associate and Regional Directors.
- This includes assessing policy and program feasibility, setting goals, developing implementation plans, structuring organizational work, and establishing performance and internal control standards.
- Coordination with other Commission units and external agencies-such as FDA, DOJ, CFPB, FCC, USDA, and USPS-is a core responsibility to ensure alignment on consumer protection efforts.
- The incumbent may brief or testify before Congress on proposed legislation or regulatory issues and advise on the need for new legislative authority.
- Additional duties include providing guidance to the Commission on consumer protection cases, recommending actions related to investigations and litigation, and keeping Commissioners informed about significant trends affecting consumer protection.
Education
You must possess a J.D. or LL.B. degree from an accredited law school.
