About the role

This position is located with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, OJS, Indian Police Academy in Devils Lake, North Dakota.

What you will do

  • Serves as part of a program management team for training programs, supervises students, other instructors, and coordinates all logistics for a Corrections Training Program.
  • Including but not limited to: Providing instructional program within scope of supervising criminal offenders while in detention/correctional institutions or community-based detention/correctional treatment or rehabilitation facilities.
  • Providing classroom training on standards, rules, and regulations from the Code of Federal Regulations, BIA Manual, Department of the Interior Manuals, and other governing references for detention and correctional facility operations and programs.
  • Provides field training in the admission and departure of criminal offenders according to regulations and operational description, documenting that the orientation (i.e. rules, expectations) are adhered to.
  • Identifies training needs, develops and revises training materials, and provides general and specialized techniques in corrections.
  • Instructs classes and conducts practical exercises according to pre-established lesson plans and course outlines for the students to achieve course objectives.
  • Monitors and evaluates the performance of students, investigates student misconduct and provides advice and counseling.
  • Participates in committees to review curriculum, makes oral and written presentations on training courses and makes recommendations for improvement.

Once the application process is complete, a review of your qualifications will be conducted to determine if you are qualified for this job. Qualified candidates will be assigned to a quality category. The quality categories are: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified.

Within each of these categories, applicants eligible for veteran's preference will receive selection priority over non-preference eligibles. Best Qualified: Applicants that possess all of the job related competencies identified as important for successful job performance.

Well Qualified: Applicants that possess a majority (i.e., more than half but not all) of the job related competencies needed for successful job performance. Qualified: Applicants meet the basic eligibility and minimum qualification requirements but do not meet the definition of Best Qualified or Well Qualified as described above.

Preference in filling vacancies is given to qualified Indian candidates in accordance with the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934 (Title 25, USC, Section 472). Verification Form BIA-4432 must be submitted with the application if claiming Indian Preference.

Indian Preference eligibles not currently employed in Federal service may be appointed under the Excepted Service Appointment Authority Schedule A, 213.3112(a)(7). Related non-Federal experience or related experience as retired members of the uniformed services may be credited towards computing entitlement to leave accrual, at managerial discretion, providing that experience meets certain criteria.
