About the role

You will serve as a Career Seasonal Gardener with Fredrick Law Olmsted, National Historic Site. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis.

What you will do

  • Prepares soil beds, turf, ballfields, flower gardens, hedges, walkways, garden fixtures and other planting areas.
  • Performs soil tests to determine deficiencies and corrects these deficiencies.
  • Plants and/or transplants a wide variety of flowers, shrubs, plants and trees.
  • Selects or recommends plants for particular purposes, such as shade, boundary lines, ground cover, and/or erosion control.
  • Trims shrubs, ornamental and fruit trees and hedges.
  • Performs maintenance and limited repairs of watering/irrigation equipment.
  • Identified and diagnosis insect disease and cultural pressures.

First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the step 1 rate. This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate. A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected.

The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay. Physical Demands: Work requires frequent walking, standing, pushing of carts and wheelbarrows, bending, and stooping. Climbs ladders to trim and/or prune trees.

Frequently lifts heavy objects such as bags of fertilizer grass seed, etc. May work from an aerial lift. The gardener uses power equipment such as mowers, aerators, hedge trimmers, etc. When motor vehicle or tractor operator duties are performed, moderate effort is exerted to manipulate equipment controls. Working Conditions: Work is done outside or in a greenhouse.

In working outside, the gardener is subject to discomfort from long periods in the hot sun, and sometimes to chilly or rainy weather. In some instances, the conditions involve working in air contaminated with chemical dust and sprays being used on trees and shrubs.

This position is required to wear protective clothing during pesticide/herbicide application; as well as normal safety items such as gloves, boots, glasses, etc. Because of the duties performed, the incumbent is subject to minor injuries such as cuts, scratches, bruises, and scrapes. There is occasionally the possibility of more serious injury.

When vehicles are operated there is additional exposure to risk due to traffic accidents. All DOI employees, their spouses, and minor children may not acquire or retain any claim, permit, lease, small tract entry, or other rights granted by the Department in Federal lands, with limited exceptions.
